Can We Choose Our Purpose?

I have often heard people say that we are here for a reason and that we each have a plan for us that must be fulfilled.  I have heard others say that there is no plan, no reason.  We just exist and then we die.  Some say we are here to create a beautiful dream–our life.  Still others say, ‘Life?  What life? It is all just an illusion.’

Depending on who is speaking each of the above statements can be true.  If we believe we have purpose then we will pursue what we believe our purpose in life is.  If we believe that life has no purpose, then our lives will reflect that. If we believe we are put on this Earth to create beauty, then our lives will have beauty in it.  If we believe life is an illusion then we will probably drift along.  In some ways, it doesn’t matter which statement is factual.  What matters most is which of the statements is true for you.   Is it serving you?  Are you happy with having this as truth in your life?  Or can you, can we all choose our own purpose in life?

At different times in my life, I have chosen more than one of the above statements to believe in.  For some time, it was more than one statement at a time, which as you can imagine, only served to divide myself and led to disappointment.

Another statement I have heard is that we are put on this earth to serve.  To serve can also mean to love. However, if one is serving for personal gain then one is not really loving and the service becomes a burden.  When you serve from a duty only, no joy is realized.  On the other hand…have you ever been in love?  During those exciting, amazing, dizzying early days you will do anything for that person. You have all the time, all the energy, all the creativity to love and serve that person.  You find joy in giving.  That is the difference when you are serving in love.

Here is the statement that I wish to adopt more fully:  I am here to love. Why?  First of all personally, as a Christian, I believe this is what we are called to do.  Also, if I choose to love first, then joyful service will follow.  And you know what else?  You can love creatively.  You can serve by giving from your true self.  In the end, you will be living a beautiful dream.

And love says, “I will, I will take care of you.” To everything that is near.–Hafiz

Can you imagine what it would be like if we all chose to believe that we are put on this earth to love all that is near to us? Oh of course, realistically, it wouldn’t always be easy.  We are humans and sometimes we find things or certain individuals difficult to love but I humbly believe that a loving spirit grows with practice.
